Two Place at WYSE State Finals

The Neoga High School WYSE team competed on Monday, April 2nd at the University of Illinois in the Division 300 WYSE state finals. Courtney Cornell received 4th place and Kyle Ludwig 6th place in engineering graphics. The team, coached by Mrs. Cohorst, is made up of Jacob Alumbaugh, Amanda Baker, Michael Baker, Courtney Cornell, Ryan Evans, Joey Goldstein, Seth Kline, Ethan Lawrence, Kyle Ludwig, Kelton Nichols, Ryan Ott, Travis Walk, Becca Warfel, and Tim Yurs.

WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) requires that students take two tests from the following subjects: biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics. Students are selected for the team based on teacher recommendation in these subjects. Students compete individually and as a team.

This year, Morgan Park Academy won first place followed by Elgin Academy in second place. College Preparatory School of America finished third, Keith Country Day came in fourth, and Central A & M received the fifth place trophy. The WYSE contest is also held in other states and has been held internationally as well. It is separated into four divisions based on school enrollment, similar to athletic state finals. It is sponsored by the University of Illinois engineering department to identify talented students in various engineering fields.

National Honor Society Prepares for Culvers’ Night

Neoga’s chapter of the National Honor Society is planning a fundraising night at Culvers’ Restaurant in Effingham. The members will be working from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, April 4th to raise money for their club. Culvers has agreed to donate 10% of their profits in exchange for their work. Please come and enjoy a meal at Culvers to show your support!

Pi Day

Advanced Math students Travis Walk, Kamryn Boarman, Bailey Dow, Jesika Warner, and Trevor Walk wear their pi shirts that they wore to commemorate Pi Day (3-14). Jesika was the winner of the contest sponsored by Math Club for the best designed pi shirt and received a gift card for a pie from Niemerg’s Restaurant. Math Club also held a “slice of pie” sale during lunch and handed out pi pencils with the pie.

Engineering Open House

Maddie Gibson and Olivia Ott are watching one of the many activities at the University of Illinois Engineering Open House. Math Club members and the Advanced Math class attended the event which is held to promote careers in engineering.

Neoga WYSE Team Advances to State

Neoga’s WYSE team received third place in Division 300 at the sectional competition held on March 8th at Eastern Illinois University. Central A & M won first place with a score of 474.4 points, followed by Cumberland with a score of 466.3 points. Neoga and Palestine tied for 3rd place with a score of 464.4 points. All of these teams will advance to the state finals which will be held at the University of Illinois on April 2nd.

Individuals from Neoga who won awards are Travis Walk (1st place in Math), Kelton Nichols (1st place in engineering graphics), Seth Kline (tied for 2nd in computer science), Kyle Ludwig and Coutney Cornell (tied for 3rd in engineering graphics), and Becca Warfel (3rd in English). Others who competed and contributed to the team score were Jacob Alumbaugh, Amanda Baker, Michael Baker, Courtney Cornell, Bailey Dow, Ryan Evans, Joey Goldstein, Ethan Lawrence, and Tim Yurs. Mrs. Sally Cohorst is the coach of the team.

In Division 700, Monticello won first place, followed by St. Anthony in second, and Sullivan and Tolono Unity tied for 3rd. Mahomet- Seymour won 1st in Division 1500 followed by Champaign Central in 2nd place. All of these schools will also advance to state competition.

WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) contests are held annually to recognize the top students throughout Illinois in various subjects. Students are required to take two tests from the following subjects: biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics. Neoga’s team for regional competition is selected based on teacher recommendation in each of these subjects. If the team advances to sectionals, student scores and subject scores from the regional competition determine which students are then selected to compete at the sectionals.

NHS Surprise Breakfast

Seth Kline, Michael Baker, Ryan Ott, and Dan Brown enjoyed the National Honor Society surprise breakfast which is held to inform the candidates of their selection. Initiates are Dan Brown, Seth Kline, Michael Baker, Kamryn Boarman, Bailey Dow, Ethan Lawrence, and Jesika Warner. Current members include Amanda Baker, Heather Baker, Hannah Fritcher, Erica Hotze, Ryan Ott, Sierra Struthers, Becky Walk, Mikaela Walk, and Becca Warfel. The ceremony to induct the new members will be held on March 13th.
