Mrs. Leanne Craig’s chemistry students from Neoga High School took a day off of class work this month to celebrate an important discovery in the field of chemistry -- the mole. While the first thing that comes to mind is most likely a small, furry mammal, a mole in chemistry is actually a number. It is 6.02 x 1023, a basic unit in grams used to calculate the molar mass of the elements. It was discovered by a scientist named Amadeo Avogadro who, unfortunately, got no credit for his discovery until after his death. However, a scientific holiday has been named in his honor.
The date is October 23rd, and the holiday is celebrated from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. Students celebrated with a variety of activities. Some of the students came into school at 6:02 am to make a mole day video. Others came to class with mole day treats, drinks, jokes, posters, or other mole related projects. One student even brought in a mole-tato, a potato with a picture of a mole (the animal) on it talking about the scientific mole. Students were required to amass a total of fifty points with an optional ten extra credit points possible.
