The Neoga High School WYSE team competed on Monday, April 2nd at the University of Illinois in the Division 300 WYSE state finals. Courtney Cornell received 4th place and Kyle Ludwig 6th place in engineering graphics. The team, coached by Mrs. Cohorst, is made up of Jacob Alumbaugh, Amanda Baker, Michael Baker, Courtney Cornell, Ryan Evans, Joey Goldstein, Seth Kline, Ethan Lawrence, Kyle Ludwig, Kelton Nichols, Ryan Ott, Travis Walk, Becca Warfel, and Tim Yurs.
WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) requires that students take two tests from the following subjects: biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics. Students are selected for the team based on teacher recommendation in these subjects. Students compete individually and as a team.
This year, Morgan Park Academy won first place followed by Elgin Academy in second place. College Preparatory School of America finished third, Keith Country Day came in fourth, and Central A & M received the fifth place trophy. The WYSE contest is also held in other states and has been held internationally as well. It is separated into four divisions based on school enrollment, similar to athletic state finals. It is sponsored by the University of Illinois engineering department to identify talented students in various engineering fields.
